"Life gets in the way...."

I made a posting to Bike Forums mentioning I've restarted Historian on Two Wheels to help me get focused on weight loss and improving my physical ability. One of the comments made in the ensuing discussion was:

"You know what you need to do, that's half the battle, the easy half. We would all be the ideal weight if life didn't keep getting in the way....."

Although the sentiments were well-intentioned, I can't accept that last statement. "Life getting in the way" is one of the biggest cop-outs I've come across. We make the life we choose. True, we don't have the same sorts of advantages others may have. There are forces out of our control, of course. We have to overcome them best we can. But you don't overcome them by making excuses, and saying "life got in the way" is the biggest one there is. (No wonder it's a popular expression in America.)

If I let "life" get in the way, I'd not have had the last five years of life. I'm glad I let nothing get in my way of changing my life for the better. And I'm not about to start.
