Tour Report, President's Day Weekend

The President's Day weekend promised to be a cold one,
so naturally
Neil Fein, the NJ half of the Neils on Wheels Bike Touring Team,
wanted
to do an overnight tour. "It's only 35 and 30 mile legs" he said
on the
phone. I was very out of shape and hadn't ridden any distance
in nearly
a month. So of course I said "Sure." What better time and place
to
break in my new Bicycle Club of Philadelphia jersey but in
the freezing
cold and a place 60 miles from Philadelphia?

Decision made, I drove the 100 miles to Neil's home on Friday the 15th.
The plan was to 'warm up' with a short ride with Neil F. that
afternoon. Neil doesn't drive, and he was riding a short errand to pick
up flowers for his wife after work. So as he rode by his home to head
to the florist I fell in line behind him. I developed renewed respect
for his commuting skills as I traveled with him through traffic on Rt
27 in Highland Park. I also learned if you pack carefully you can carry
tulips in your panniers.

The next day we headed out to East Windsor at 11:00 AM. A problem with
my rear brake led us to Highland Park Cyclery, where Nathan replaced
the pads and adjusted the brake. By 11:30 we were rolling again through
New Brunswick, and then past the city into the Middlesex County
countryside. I was glad to be free from the urban area, and not just
for disagreeable drivers; one of the ever-present utility cyclists
nearly crashed into me because he was riding against traffic and cut in
front of me.

We headed toward the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath. The land as we
approached the canal was so attractive I could almost forget it was New
Jersey. And I could almost forget the cold. Almost. Neil and I had
several exchanges along these lines:

"Neil, how are you doing?"

"I'm cold, Neil."

We reached the canal, and I soon discovered the towpath was too wet for
a 260 pound cyclist on 32 cm tires. I sank nearly 2 inches into mud. So
we changed plans and traveled on Canal Road. Along the way we dodged
ice patches on the road, and lots of gravel. We stopped at Griggstown
so I could pose in my BCP jersey:

(Blame the club president, she sold it to me.)

Soon enough we reached Kingston, where we searched for lunch. By now it
was nearly 2:30, and the deli in town was closing. So we ate lunch
outside.

"Neil, how are you doing?"

"I'm cold."

We decided to cut out a scenic five mile swing through a local park,
but in doing so we missed a turn on our cue sheet, and wound up riding
six miles to save five. By 5:30 I was very cold, and hungry, and thanks
to Neil's GPS unit we located the home of our host. I was soon enough
warmed up, and I entertained the twin two year olds in the home by
pointing to my jersey and booming in a deep voice, "I am BCP-Man!" The
little fellows were fascinated with my jersey, and they wanted to try
on my helmet and play with my helmet light.

However, the children were bewildered by the fact two cyclists could
have the same first name. Their mother asked them "what's his name",
pointing to Mr. Fein. "Neil" they shouted. (Two year olds never speak
in anything but shouts.) "And what's his name?" she said, pointing to
me. The children looked confused. "His name is Neil" she said, to which
they both shouted, "BCP-Man!" The kids did catch on by the time we
left; I understand afterwards they were asking, "where are the Neils?"

The next morning we left about 9:15, and arrived at Neil's mom's home
an hour later for brunch and a chance to get out of the cold. I ate
well, too well. When we left two hours later I was full, too full to
ride without discomfort.

"Neil, how are you doing?"

"I'm cold and I ate too much."

"You're supposed to. It was a Jewish brunch."

"I feel bloated."

"You really should convert. We have much better food than Christians do."

"Please don't talk about food."

We reached Neil's house by three PM.

The next ride was a recovery ride on President's Day to test one of
Neil's new commuting routes. My extended weekend of Neils on Wheels
cycling ended with a ride Tuesday morning to Neil's work carpool, then
a ride back to my car and a drive back to Pennsylvania to start my work
week. Another Neils on Wheels Bike Touring Team tour in the bag. Here's
the official photo of the NOWBTT members, including BCP-Man, resting
after a recovery ride:

I thought I should get a camp pad as well. This is a Wenzel foam pad.

Tent for Upcoming Tours

I considered getting a small one man tent as Neil F. did, but I'm about five inches taller and, ahem, 50 pounds heavier than my fellow Neil. So instead I picked up the Columbia Lost Lake Two Man tent, shown here. It's about six pounds.

Sleeping Bag for Upcoming Tours

Since I need gear for my upcoming bike tours, including my trip to Green Lane in April, from Pittsburgh to Washington in June, and cross country in 2009, I thought I'd start posting about my purchases. Here's the 40 degree sleeping bag I picked up, the Albany by Wenzel. The bag weighs all of four pounds.

Our hosts Saturday evening have twin two year old boys. The rugrats were impressed with the jersey and my helmet light, so I used a deep booming voice and told them "I am BCP Man!" They loved it.

Monday afternoon I rode with Neil F. to try out one of his new bike commuting routes. His company is relocating his office, and since he doesn't drive, he needs to find a way to get to work. We rode 8 miles through afternoon traffic I'd not ride in if I could help it.

Tuesday morning I rode with Neil to his carpool, about 3 miles, and a longer route back to my car before leaving for MY job in Pennsylvania, two hour's away. The temperature was about freezing, but dry and with little wind as we headed out at 6:25 AM. We reached the carpool about 6:50, and I headed back, arriving at Neil's apartment at 7:20. The only incidents were my unsuccessful attempt to filter by a NJT bus, and finding far too much ice on the side of the road.

The photo was taken following our ride on Monday, and it's as good an excuse as any to thank my buddy for keeping me cycling during this depressing off-season. I've been away from my bike too long, and I would have been away a lot longer if it hadn't been for Neil pulling me into long rides with him. Thank you, my friend.

My overnight tour with Neil F. began at 11:00 AM on Saturday, in the cold. And the cold was a constant theme for me during the first day of the ride. Aside from a sore butt, the cold weather was the biggest complaint about the ride. We rode through some beautiful countryside, so scenic I almost forgot it was Jersey, but I was chilled. By the time we reached our hosts in East Windsor I was desperate for a hot shower and a hot meal. I got both, thank goodness, and very warm-hearted hosts to boot.

The next morning we left at 9:00 AM and visited Neil F.'s mother for a couple of hours over a typically excessive Jewish brunch. I ate too much and felt queasy and bloated during the rest of the ride. The weather was warmer, so I didn't whine about the cold... as much.

Aside from the cold, the only other problem was a mechanical one on my bike. We spent a half-hour on the first day with Nathan at Highland Park Cyclery replacing my rear brake pads. Neil's route was wonderful, and his GPS helped us after we missed a turn.

A very short warm-up ride for the weekend bike tour. I arrived early at Neil F.'s home in New Jersey, parked the car, and set up the bike. When Neil rode by on his way home from work, I followed him. My buddy had an errand to run getting flowers for his wife, so we rode 6 miles round trip through downtown traffic to fetch tulips.

I'm Back

My apologies for the recent absence of posts. I'd like to say I stopped blogging because of the writer's strike, but that would be a falsehood.

In mid-January I began experiencing episodes of lightheadedness. The first one or two I wrote off as the result of a lack of sleep. After the fifth one in a week I saw my doctor. Soon enough I was sent up to Pottstown for a CT scan. The scan revealed a small lesion deep in the left side of my brain. While I was assured I didn't have much to be concerned about, an MRI was scheduled, and I will be undergoing it tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I underwent a blood test for sugar levels. That came back normal. Still the cause of my lightheadedness was unknown. But I've found taking over the counter sleep aids before retiring to be effective in eliminating it, which seems to be a good clue it's a sleep disorder of some kind. My guess is I've developed it from a combination of my odd hours, the shortened days, my lack of exercise this winter and consequent weight gain, and some personal problems I've suffered over the past several months. (My 'bike mentor' and I parted ways in an ugly manner that was a disgrace to both of us, to name one.)

But I seem to be back. I have new goals for my cycling year - riding Pittsburgh to Washington DC with Neil F., completing my first long solo tour (to Baltimore), riding 175 miles in the MS City to Shore this year. And I have weight loss goals - lose the 20-25 extra pounds I put on this winter and then drop the 20 or so I need to reach goal weight.

I'm back, in other words.

Ride Report, February 9, 2008

8 miles on the Perkiomen and Schuylkill River Trails near Audubon and Oaks. The weather was cold but ridable. No issues to report other than a touch of lightheadedness at the end of the ride.
